Timshel Story

The Timshel Story

We feel strongly about the good that small businesses can do in the world.

Larger corporations have their advantages. But, we believe that the pressures of VC firms and being publicly traded often drive larger companies to intensely focus on a relatively short-term time horizon.

But, small businesses can focus on a comparatively long-term time horizon that lends itself to doing good by its employees and its community. And the nature of small business necessitates a good stewarding of resources that is often foreign to non-profit and governmental agencies.

This brings us to the word Timshel.

In the Book of Genesis, the story of Cain and Abel calls for us to take responsibility for our actions. Abel is living rightly and is blessed. But, Cain is not living rightly and he’s angry. So, God himself confronts Cain saying, “…sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.” The Hebrew word used for “you must” in this context is one that means “you must” or “thou mayest.”

This is a powerful truth: there is chaos and evil that lurks in the shadows of the world and in our hearts. But, it is our responsibility to choose good and to rule over that evil.

At Timshel Team, we want to choose to engage with the world in a way that is productive and fruitful like Abel; rather than jealous and destructive like Cain.

We are excited to make that choice with you and to influence others to make such a choice as well.

But the Hebrew word, the word timshel — ‘Thou mayest’ — that gives a choice. It might be the most important word in the world. That says the way is open. That throws it right back on a man.
